  1. Everything in this new version looks drab, desaturated, boring, depressing or unpleasant. Even the actors are uglier and less talented/well spoken compared to the 80s version. Who would subject themselves to this nonsense?

  2. The level of mutual respect here is crazy. Even the enemy waited for him till he finished giving respect to that lady before stabbing with the lancer.

  3. Why didn't anyone help her…? The could have thrown shurikin to help. If they didn't have any weapons to defend Mariko then why couldn't they pick up rocks and throw them. See that proves mariko wasn't surrounded by allies …but instead surrounded by enemies.
No other scene other than this has ever made me both feel for mariko AND feel so alone at the same time. Life is terrible.

  4. это самая самурайская сцена за всю историю моей жизни. а я много чего пересмотрел. Линия марико – ее жизнь и смерть после этого эпизода – ну и сама задумка ее господина – раскрывает всю суть Пути Самурая.

  5. That is just so unbelievably stupid. Why did they feel the need to disrespect the character of Mariko by unsuccessfully portraying her as a physical combatant? That is so of this time, and will not age well.

  6. According to Jixiao Xinshu, written by the Ming(China) general Qi Jiguang, who fought against samurai forces during the Japanese invasions of Korea that occurred just before the events depicted in this drama, a tactic of using a six-man spear(Langxian) unit to engage a single samurai achieved great success.

He described the samurai in the following way:

“Their movements are swift, almost like dancing, and their forward charge is as fast as a flash of light.
Because of this, our Ming soldiers are overwhelmed by their momentum.
Japanese soldiers move with lively, springing steps, and once they begin moving, they close the distance all at once.
Moreover, their swords are about five chi long, allowing them to strike from a considerable distance.
Our swords cannot easily approach them, and our spears are too slow.
When we encounter them, many of our soldiers are cut down and killed.
This is because their weapons are extremely sharp, and they wield heavy swords with both hands, using them with great skill.
Firearms are effective against the Japanese when used from a distance.
However, they show no fear and charge forward until they are close enough to strike.
Our gunners require time to reload their weapons, and during that time they often allow the enemy to approach.
Once the Japanese soldiers gain momentum in their charge, it is difficult to stop them.
Their swordsmanship is quick and light, but after they close the distance, the movements of our gunners become far too slow.
Our swords are not effective weapons for responding immediately after discarding a firearm.
Therefore, we too should equip ourselves with long swords in the Japanese style.”
