During the climax of Akira Kurosawa’s classic masterpiece Throne of Blood (1957), director Kurosawa wanted absolute realism for Washizu’s dramatic death sequence. Instead of relying on props or camera tricks, Kurosawa hired expert archers to shoot real, lethal arrows directly at legendary actor Toshiro Mifune from just feet away!
While Mifune wore protective wooden boards beneath his costume, his head and neck had no armor whatsoever. The terror and panic captured on film were 100% real as arrows thudded into the walls mere inches from his face. Mifune later admitted he was completely speechless when watching the take, calling it his luckiest day ever to survive the dangerous shoot!
