  1. This movie is so cool. Before Mifune really nailed the solitary samurai scowling thing, he did films like this, which were incredible. There are wonderful moments in this picture, and always great to see him with Shimura, who is an excellent co-star; they just have magic chemistry onscreen together. I won't discuss MY fave scenes since some people browsing comments may not have seen the film yet. But the interplay from the very first moments when the 'tough Yakuza guy" shows up, and the Doctor treats him, set the tone for the movie. Don't miss this one.: BTW Mifune was a snappy dresser and could dance with the best of them!!

  2. I’m convinced this was an inspiration for Red Dead Redemption 2’s storyline. There are a lot of parallels between Matsunaga and Arthur Morgan. Both stories involve an outlaw, who after a lifetime of crime and criminal enterprise decides it may be best to move on, Okada and Micah play similar roles, both protagonists succumb to TB and the story documents their progression with the disease… really just so many others to mention but adds up to a really great movie even if the ending was a tad lackluster.

  3. I was looking for a more modern movie of his but I found this one. Amazing story telling…the misdirection on the first scene…I thought the drunken angel was the patient but it was the the doctor, the healer… I find it to be very modern as I resonate with it deeply….he was ahead of his time….timeless. I love this movie
