It's a legitimate question, I don't understand why he answers like that. There are a lot of Japanese people who don't care about anime. For example, I'm Italian, and there are people in my country who don't eat pizza. Being Japanese doesn't mean you love anime, just as being Italian doesn't mean you necessarily eat pizza.
